We have ice forming on the fins inside my refrigerator. Is this caused by an improper (old) seal? If so, has anyone replaced their own seal? Can someone who isn't too handy replace them ourselves?
Thanks, Jodi

I don't think its anything to worry about. I have had 3 different Refers and they all had some ice accumilate on the fins. It comes from opening the door and letting humidity in. Can' be helped. These are not frost free refers like you have at home. We normally have to defrost at least once a season. For full timers I would have to assume more often.

We greatly improved the icing when I got the DW to stop 'browsing' in the fridge. Now we open the door get what we want and close it. Made a big difference.

There is a lot to be said about opening the refer door and getting it clsed as fast as possible. I read that for 1 minute the door is open it takes 1 hour to cool back down to what it was originally. We do defrost about twice a year and a lot depends on the humidity.

So, then you don't think it has to do with bad seals?

We helped that problem by buying a battery operated frig fan at Walmart or Camping world. It helps circulate air. It just delayed defrosting a little longer.

A question along the same line. The temp in our ref part is fine but would like to decrease the temp in the freezer. How is this done. Will moving the thermister ( I think it is called) up or down change the temp in the freezer because the temp adjustment would have to be moved to keep the correct temp in the ref part?

Ice forms on our fins ONLY when we keep it closed for long periods, such as overnight or going away for the weekend. Opening it will give the fins a chance to warm up and melt the icicles.
We have the 4-door with an outside digital readout. It stays around 36 deg, but sometimes reads at 35. That keeps milk icy cold without freezing and ice cream hard in the winter.

I turn the temp. setting down to level 2 over night and it helps the ice and frost melt off the fins and out the drain.
Then in the morning turn it back up to the normal setting.

ice on the fins is not a problem. according to the manual, the refrig goes into a defrost cycle to melt this ice about every 48 hours and lasts about 2 hours. they say it is best to turn the refrig on between 4 and 10 pm so this cycle happens later in the day. i know ours goes up 3-4 degrees in the evening but is back to normal temp by morning. this cycle does not defrost the freezer. that is still a manual process.
